Public records are usually just pieces of information that aren’t confidential – meaning that they can be viewed by the general public. Let’s take for example people who are getting married. These people can choose whether or not their marriage information is confidential or public. So if the marriage has not been recorded as being confidential, this information is open for anyone in the general public to know about. Although, just because these public records are free, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are easy to access. Some organisations will charge people to view such information, and even if they don’t, there still might be some restrictions to the people who can view them.

The same scenario applies to criminal records too. These type of records are commonly used for employers, so that they can check the background of a person before they decide to hire then for a job. Criminal records are kept under the watchful eye of police information centres, and can usually be assessed through reasonable requests, such as when it comes to hiring someone for a job. This type of public record is usually relevant when it comes to working with children etc. It should also be noted, that only policing agencies can check a persons criminal record and the information is not freely available to the general public, but will be given to an employer if it is required.

Court records are some what different to criminal ones; in the sense that they are a part of The Free of Information Act in most countries. This basically means that the courts are required to allow people to have access to the information, to those who request it. There are a few websites online that allow you to find court records, where you should be able to search for both criminal records and public marriage records. Doing online searches like this isn’t the same as doing normal searches over the internet. In order to find the person you are looking for, you cant just type their name in and expect to find what you are looking for – you have to find their full legal name, their age, date of birth, etc. When doing searches like this, you should always check that the information you have put in is 100 percent correct.

The ability to check public records and the likes will vary from country to country – but in general, you will find that some of the information will be openly available to the public upon authorisation, where as other information, such as criminal records may only be accessed by the police, who may or may not pass the information on to you.

Public records can hold all sorts of different information, depending on what you are looking for. Some people will want to use them to find out birth/death record reports, where as other people will want to use them for background check. Whenever you are attempting to do a background check on someone, especially for criminal records, you must contact the appropriate organisation first before trying to start your own little search on someone, because you will most likely not find what you are looking for.

There has been a lot of debate as to which records should be available to the general public. A lot of people feel that they should have the right to know if there is a criminal living in their area, or has recently moved into their area, so that they can do a background check on them. Many parents who have children are looking to have such information openly available to the general public, as they feel it is the best way to protect them from people with certain criminal records. Whether this type of freedom will be available in the future is unknown, but many people are making their opinions heard about the matter.

Public records can be seen as a useful thing to some people, where as other people may not agree that such information should be available to anyone who requests it. However, no matter which side you are on, these records will always be available, but how much information is available may change over time.
